Taste the world | Australië

Yum!

Taste the World (17) – Australia part 1

The Australian roadtrip of our ‘Taste the World-journey’ starts in Sydney. We see the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Fish Market and former classmate Michelle. And we walk the 10 km trail from Manly to Spit, visit the Blue Mountains, go whalewatching and catch the first night of Vivid Sydney. The food is always good; from our dinners in restaurants and bites at the foodiemarket to the take away dinners we enjoy on our hotel room with view at Sydney’s skyline.

After a few days in the city, we hit the road! We take the coastal route to the south and stay in Batemans Bay (in a genuine 80’s cabin, where we have dinner at the local Country Club, haha), in Lakes Entrance (in a motel like in an episode of CSi ;-) and in Foster, on the edge of Wilsons Promontory NP. Here we do a beautiful walk through the wetlands and we see wombats in the wild! We also see emu’s, deer and rabbits, but those wombats…! I love them! Before driving to Melbourne, we stop at Phillip Island, where little blue penguins wobble up the beach and to their houses at dusk.

In Melbourne we get a big warm welcome from Ryan and Amanda, who we’ve met on the Incatrail in Perú. They take us on a citytour and we have delicious dinner, two days in a row! We have coffee, see alleys with graffiti, walk through Chinatown, have drinks at rooftop bars, see a building in a building at Melbourne Central, relish lovely cupcackes, visit the public library, admire Flinders Station, walk over federal square, have drinks at Southbank… and the food… oh-my…! On the first day we have an extended banquet of Asian food and the second we enjoy kangaroo, it’s al soooo good! We have an amazingly good time and we’re grateful for their hospitality.

From Melbourne we take the ferry to Tasmania. We spend a week here and see amongst others the beautiful Wineglass Bay, historical prison Port Arthur and the rough west coast with Cradle Mountain NP covered in snow. We take gorgeous hikes, see great waterfalls and Tasmanian devils. In Hobart we eat awesome wagyu burgers with blue cheese and ribeye steaks from the charcoal grill. On the menu in Cradle Mountain is amongst others typical Tasmanian Cape Grimm steak and wallaby. Yum!
