Sakura seizoen in Japan

Zo’n vijf jaar geleden werden we verliefd op Japan. Wij wisten toen al: we komen terug. En wel in het prachtige sakura seizoen. Hello again, Japan!

Sakura bloeiperiode

🌸

Japan is prachtig, intrigerend én: ingewikkeld.

Taste the world: sakura season in Japan

About five years ago the mister and I were in Japan and we fell in love with the country. It’s só different and yet so knowable to travel trough. Full of cultural differences and extraordinary discoveries. Clean, safe and super organized. We already knew back then: we’ll be back. Hello again, Japan!

Special and beautiful season

The last time we visited Japan, the trees slowly turned orange and red. Autumn is a wonderful season to visit the country. But there is, of course, another very special season. A season in which the Japanese themselves go crazy: sakura season. In spring, when the cherry blossoms start to bloom, the land is in awe. Everyone goes outside to look at the beautiful pink trees.

Symbolic blossom

Our country also has beautiful blossoms in spring, why go to Japan? Sure we do. But the difference with Japan is there’s certain places with like 100 cherry trees together. Which causes a fantastic blossom explosion. Another difference is that the Japanese give it meaning. The cherry blossom – or sakura in Japanese – symbolizes transient beauty. The blossoms bloom beautifully but briefly; just like life.

Sakura flowering

The cherry trees in Japan blossom roughly between mid-March and the end of April, give or take. The full bloom only lasts a short period of time: about a week. A tree bears blossoms for about a week or two , from the opening of the first buds to the end of full bloom. So your trip requires some timing. Fortunately, every year, the bloom of the cherry’s in different regions is meticulously monitored and predicted.

Hanami spots

As soon as the sakura starts to bloom, all the Japanese go out to look at the cherry blossom. They call this hanami. They go for a picnic under the cherry trees and take about 1 billion photos of the blossoms ;-) Note: cherry trees are located in specific places, so you have to specifically select your hanami spot. We loved Shinjuku Gyoen and Meguro River in Tokyo, Philosopher’s Path and Maruyama Park in Kyoto and Nishinomaru Park in Osaka.

Sakura beer and donuts

The Japanese are so fond of their blossoms that they prefer to give everything a sakura twist. Asahi sells a limited edition sakura beer (but actually I think only the label is different), the donut baker creates sakura shaped donuts with a pink topping and Kitkat produces a pink sakura bar with sake. And just about any other brand also makes a product with sakura. The supermarket shelves also turn pink.

🌸

Sakura season in Japan is really an experience. Do you also want to see this for yourself? Then plan your trip on time. A tip for Japan travelers: familiarize yourself with the customs and culture in advance. Japan is beautiful, intriguing and: complicated. And the last thing you want is to insult respectful Japanese people with your clumsy behavior. To be honest: we are also still learning. So we kinda need to go back again ;-)
