More than Mayo’s passie voor belevingscommunicatie

Issue #2 van More than Mayo magazine!

Beleving in retail: Beefbar Butcher Shop

Beleving in design: Slagerij De Hamvraag

Passionate about experience communication

A beautiful new butcher shop has opened in Monaco. The news is being shared on Twitter and LinkedIn. The shop is more than just a store; it is an experience. The fact that people are so enthusiastic about this makes me happy. Experience communication lights my inner fire.

Imagineering as a method

A beautiful and complete concept like that store makes my eyes twinkle and my heart skip a beat. I believe in communication through experience. That’s why More than Mayo stands for meaningful experiences that communicate a message or vision and have an indelible effect on your target audience. Designing an effective meaningful and memorable experience is called imagineering. Walt Disney gave this name to a whole new discipline. It’s the use of knowledge and imagination to create experiences that match people’s (your customers’!) values and involve them. As a result people are positively affected and a connection with your brand, product or vision is established.

Experience in retail: Beefbar Butcher Shop

The butcher shop experience mentioned above is part of high-end meat restaurant Beefbar. In the shop you can buy the exclusive meat and charcuterie from the Beefbar menu. The store is kind of Cartier meets Louis Vuitton, with large windows full of precious meat. The products are of excellent quality, you receive elaborate advice from the Beefbar experts and your purchase is wrapped in a luxurious package. It’s like an exclusive and classy club, where your steak is treated as a nugget of gold. The essentials here are not the extremely luxurious products. Instead, it’s the completeness of the concept that makes the difference. Every part of the experience has been thought through: the atmosphere of the environment, the presentation of the product, the way service is offered and the look of packaging and other communications.

Experience in hospitality: CEO masters of meat

In the Netherlands we also have a good example of a great experience in the meat category: CEO masters of meat (my translation ;-) It’s been a while since I’ve been there, but I remember it very well. And memorability is a characteristic of a well designed experience. They got all the building blocks right. The decor is fantastic: antique meat grinders, a wooden chopping block, nostalgic scales, meat hooks and white tiles. They could have pulled it right out of my grandparents’ butcher shop. Service is friendly, competent and swiftly and the menu is well composed. The design elements suit the atmosphere and the choices around the presentation of the food are well made. The steak itself? Ridiculously delicious. Fries with homemade mayo and a glass of Chardonnay with it. Everything added up. I was in heaven. And I’m still recommending this place, even after al this time.

Experience in design: Butcher store ‘De Hamvraag’

Not only retail, restaurants or products can benefit from experience communication and design. You can also create an experience to make people think about certain issues. Earlier this year pop-up butcher store ‘De Hamvraag’ (The Key Question) opened its doors: a conceptual space with interactive exhibits, demonstrations and workshops, that offered a place for discussion about meat. In a super awesome setting (how cool are those two-dimensional pieces of meat … ?!) you could see, hear, feel, smell and taste to get information about meat production and consumption. This made people think about the value and future of meat. Because all senses were stimulated and because the experience is a consistent whole designed with attention to detail, people are drawn into the subject and stimulated do something with it.
