Branding versus marketing

Marketing, branding, communicatie, reclame… allemaal één pot nat, toch?

Branding versus marketing

Marketing, branding, communications, advertising… same same, right? Well… not quite :-) Although they do have a few things in common. Let’s have a look at the similarities and differences between branding and marketing.

What is branding?

Branding (literally: to brand with a branding iron – e.g. with cattle) is assigning a set of properties to a company or product, so that people will recognize it and have certain expectations of it. Based on this image, people are going to make a transactional decision and choose to (not) build up a relationship with the company or product. A brand (strategy) is the basis that defines what you stand for, how you’ll help people and what differentiates your brand.

What is marketing?

Marketing (literally: to bring to market) is stimulating your target group actively to bring about a transaction – or at least a reaction. Which of course contributes to establishing this relationship with the target group: your branding. Your brand is the foundation for your marketing (strategy). If you don’t base your marketing on your brand’s principles, the target audience will not understand, nor accept you, your company or your product.

Long term vs. short term

One difference is that branding focuses on the long term and marketing focuses on the medium and short term. Marketing campaigns are aimed at generating (immediate) response. Actions will be measured, evaluated and adjusted if necessary. While the next campaign will aim to reach the target group in a different way, the brand and what it stands for will remain the same.

‘Push’ vs. ‘Pull’

Another difference between branding and marketing is that branding is mainly ‘pull’ and marketing is ‘push’. By being this brand with these specific characteristics, you’ll attract people who recognize the characteristics of your brand and share the same values. They are being pulled toward you, like a magnet. In marketing you proactively push the brand to people’s attention.

Use both to create growth

Branding and marketing are both in their own way important for the growth of an organization. And if you want to do that successfully, make sure that one contributes to the other. Your brand strategy and your marketing strategy should be closely intertwined. Branding and marketing go hand in hand and you need to do both to achieve your goals.

Do you have a strategy for your branding and marketing, and do they fit together well?
