(English version below Dutch ↓)

Beleving is alles

Duidelijke taal.

Is beleving bullshit?

The Experience Economy: ‘Experiences are the critical link between a company and its potential audience in today’s increasingly distractible, time-starved world.’

How crucial is experience for your brand?

‘The zeitgeist requires a return on experience.’ ‘Stop the bullshit about experience.’ Just two headlines from recent articles about experience in retail. The contrast cannot be greater. Is brand experience really bullshit or is it thé ingredient for a successful future?

Experience is everything

The first quote is extracted from an article on RetailTheater.nl. They refer to the conclusion from a PWC study: ‘Today’s consumers are looking for uniqueness, so companies must invest in customer experience. Offering a superior (store)experience is what will make you a winner.’ They even state that companies that invest in experience can realize a 16% surcharge for their products and services. And that experience is everything. That’s pretty direct and clear language.

Is experience bullshit?

Arjan Leest uses even clearer language in the heading of his article on LinkedIn. He claimes experience is bullshit. But instead of proving his point, he actually confirms that experience is more important than ever: ‘The costs of online purchases are going up, so the millennial is coming back to the store.’ That’s exactly the place where you can amaze or entertain your customer with a pleasant experience. He also says: ‘Don’t focus on your customer, focus on your brand.’ I say: true. And from there, build your irresistible brand experience.

But… what ís experience anyway?

Who ever said that experience is a moss wall in your coffee shop or a bicycle in your shoe store? And why would you ‘add’ experience, Arjan? At the end of his plea, he states: ‘Focus on your brand and use your brand DNA as a daily compass.’ And rightly so, positioning, branding and organization (of customer processes and touch points) are important. Experience is a subtle interplay between who you are and how you present yourself as a brand and the way in which you connect with your target group. If this is authentic and just right, customers will give you their valuable time and attention.

Time in exchange for experience

Time and attention have become incredibly important values in our time. If your brand cannot offer an experience for which we are willing to give our time and attention to, then it is unlikely we’ll spend money on your product or service. This is exactly what Joe Pine and James Gilmore emphasize in the latest edition of their book The Experience Economy: ‘Experiences are the critical link between a company and its potential audience in today’s increasingly distracted, time-starved world.’

In short: researchers, economists and strategists (even though they might not realize it themselves ;-) confirm that brand authenticity, customer relationships and experience form the basis for growth and determine the future success of companies and stores.
